PhotoHunt – Steps

|

Yet again, ‘something I prepared earlier’ … (I truly love WordPress for this feature!!)

This week’s theme is Steps … I wish I had all my photos here from my last big overseas trip to Greece, as I had some wonderful shots of steps in Santorini, snaking all the way up the side of the island, but alas I don’t so I had to find something else. In the end I came up with these …

First up is Zoser’s Step Pyramid … built by Imhotep, the Pharaoh’s chief architect in the 27th century BC, it was the largest stone structure ever built. And what better way to show “steps” than with a “step pyramid”? Excuse the black edges – whenever I try to scan a printed photo out of my photo albums I can never seem to crop it correctly on the scanner mutter mutter mutter.

Next up I stayed with the Egyptian theme … and the pyramids … but this time it’s an inside shot of one of the Great Pyramids of Giza. Apparently there are about 97 pyramids in total in Egypt, and the three Great Pyramids were the mortuary complexes of Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus (aka Khufu, Khefre, and Menkaure), who were father, son and grandson. Going inside is definitely not for the claustrophobic, but it was an absolutely mind-blowing experience … I just remember standing at the bottom, underground, and feeling an incredible sense of awe being inside something of such historical worth … it was just an exceptional feeling, even though there is really nothing to see down there! Definitely one of the personal highlights of my life so far!

And now for something completely different …

PhotoHunt catch-up

|

I’ve been quite remiss over the last couple of weeks with the weekly Photo Hunt, so I thought I’d do the last two themes plus the current one all in one hit! I’m doing a cheat’s job so I don’t forget to post on Saturday … especially as I’ll be away from home after Thursday … so “here’s something I prepared earlier …” (ie, I put this post together on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and published it using the timestamp editor … gotta love WordPress for that little gizmo – it works a treat! It’s like a real “set it, forget it” system!) Rightio, on to the photos …

This week’s theme (14 April) is Hobby … this is one of the photos I played around with when I was trying to make up a banner header for the Focus on Finishing blog – it encompasses a lot of the tools we use in my favourite hobby … needlework. I could have shown piccies of stitching, but I figure I do that every day anyway, so that’d be a tad boring 😉

The theme from last week (7 April) was Clean … here is a shot of a duck at Lake Emerald Park getting him/herself clean at the end of a hard day (OK, perhaps stretching it a bit, but I always think it looks like it’s cleaning itself, not just preening …). I could have scanned a photo of me and my Goddaughter when she was a toddler cleaning my car, but I can’t be bothered finding it and cranking up the scanner … and quite honestly I just like the duck …

The previous week’s theme (31 March) was Water … and my choices here are of Huka Falls at Taupo, New Zealand (there’s so much water going through there at any given time, it’s amazing!). Here’s an excerpt from the 100% New Zealand tourism website:

“The Waikato River, New Zealand’s longest river, moves gracefully north from Lake Taupo between banks 100 metres apart. Just before the Huka Falls it enters a shallow ravine of hard volcanic rock. The effect is nature’s large-scale equivalent of a fire hose feeding into a very fine nozzle. The previously placid waters roar and rumble at great speed along the ravine before bursting into space out over Huka Falls to crash into the turbulent pool 11 metres below. A foot bridge right at the top of the falls puts you in a prime position to get up close and witness the frightening display of more than 220,000 litres of water blasting by every second.”

The 2nd photo is of a waterfall located on the bush walk at the Buried Village, Rotorua, New Zealand. I love the slideshow on the website’s header – brings back lots of memories of the few times we’ve visited there.

This week’s theme was a bit of a challenge … which is what it’s all about really, and the reason I enjoy the weekly Hunt! 😀

The theme this time is “empty” and this photo just makes me think of “empty” when I see it … it’s an empty vessel with an empty beach on the horizon … in fact it was from a day that was far from empty – it was the wedding day of close family friends (I’ve known the groom since we were toddlers!). I’ve always loved this photo with its muted colours … it almost has an ethereal quality to it …

PhotoHunt – Drink

|

This week’s theme is “Drink” … and these two photos suit the theme down to the ground! The first photo is my extensive cocktail booze collection, with my Aunt posing for a joke as if she’s working through the collection. Every time Mum comes over to visit me she brings another two bottles from my collection rather than buying duty free … I’m slowly getting them all ‘home’ – so, who’s up for a cocktail party? LOL.

This photo cracks me up … just the look on wee Danial’s face is a delight … and a look that you don’t normally get until your teenage years when looking at a can of beer!! He looks like he’s just found a pot of gold!! LOL. This was taken at my Dad’s 70th birthday.

PhotoHunt – Soft

|

No real explanation needed for this week’s theme – this is most of my collection of “Soft” Toys, in particular my ducks … yes, I’m definitely duck-mad, and a girl can never have enough of these fine feathered friends in whatever shape or form! 😀 The second photo is one of my all-time favourite ducks 😀 There have also been a couple more added since this photo was taken – and some have now spilled over from the bedroom into the lounge room 😉

PhotoHunt – Antique

|

Not being into ‘antique’ items, such as brooches, furniture etc (I’m more of a modern girl at heart), I struggled with this week’s theme – I thought of putting Mum’s photo up, but she wasn’t amused 😉 (actually she did suggest it later when I was still struggling).

This is the best I could come up with … some ‘antique’ buildings from a visit to Egypt about 10 years ago.

Temple of Hathor at Abu Simbel (an extremely long day trip from Aswan, but sooooo worth it!!)

PhotoHunt – Gross, & Bordeaux Update

|

It’s that time of the week again … well, almost … seeing as I’m starting night shifts tonight, and I have to get up to do a house inspection at lunchtime tomorrow, I didn’t think I’d be much in the mood for posting tomorrow … so here’s this week’s contribution to the Photo Hunt Saturday. The topic is “Gross”, and I was stuck a bit for choices yet again … but I thought these grasshoppers being on sale at the bird market in Hong Kong was quite gross, so I couldn’t resist taking a photo! (Hopefully I’ve linked it OK so you can click on it for a slightly bigger piccie.)

I also managed to get a couple of stitches into the Bordeaux Sampler today while I watched my Dodgeball DVD for the umpteenth time … I still crack up every time they start throwing the wrenches and dodging cars 😉 Next up is my Macaw SAL – I want to at least get an hour into this piece, because I know my eyes won’t handle the over-one stitching once I start my night shifts … Anyway, here’s my pitiful progress on Bordeaux for the week (the only difference from last week is the bottom row of long-arm XS and the backstitched vines for the 2nd lot of Rhodes grapes):

PhotoHunt – Silver (updated)

|

Seeing as I’ve been housebound for the last few days, and not a huge silver fan (I’m definitely a ‘golden girl’), I struggled to find any existing photos with the theme of silver … so I just came up with some lame ones myself … they’re not too artistic or clever, but they are silver 😉

Reels of silver (mainly Kreinik) threads

Tin foil scrunched up!

Well, duh!! The next time I’m looking for photos I should start with my Word document where I keep all the themes, and think of ideas in advance … I’d already found one last week some time, and forgot about it … so here’s what I originally thought of for the theme of silver in a previous lifetime – what a blonde!! Oh well, at least it made me get creative for once! 😉
