Home & Family TO BE FIXED

Just another day in … Paradise?

Well, I wish I could say that today was better than yesterday, but it’s had its moments!  I set off relatively early from Brenda & Nigel’s place, so I could go shopping for a shower curtain etc, do the property inspection, and try to pop into the airport to see Auntie Enid and Don – my first stop was to a shopping centre I hadn’t been to before, but it had a Big W, where I thought I’d get a nice cheap shower curtain and rubbish bin for the kitchen … which I did … but …

When I got back out to my car it was dead … not a screggin of life left in the stupid pile of metal! 😦

After calling the storage unit to make sure Dodgey Brothers R Us actually turned up (the good news is that they had taken a couple of loads already in the smaller truck, so at least I know it’s on its way at some stage today!), I called the NRMA which was going to take about 1 1/2 hours to come to see me – the great thing was that I had absolutely no idea where I was, other than I ‘thought’ it was Winston something shopping centre.  Anyway, after just about bursting into tears, I called Nigel up just to vent my frustrations … then eventually I decided to start looking for the intersection the mechanic was going to meet me near.  I opened up the car door, to get some ventilation in and the inside light came on very very dismally.  I don’t know why but I decided to switch the light to the “off” position just to preserve any last legs of the battery, and as soon as I did that the car started beeping!

I thought that was a strange thing for it to do, as the car only makes that sound when I’ve opened the door with the car key in the ignition (which had just happened), but only when the battery is working.  Sure enough, I turned the key and the heap of s*** kicked into life – and I tried the inside light and it burned as brightly as ever.  Go figure!!

Anyway, I’ve made a call to Brenda and Nigel’s mechanic, and I’m going to have to take it in to check out all the wiring … yet more expense that I can’t afford right now, but I can’t take the risk of putting it off any longer.  Oh well, c’est la vie – I’ll wait to see when the furniture arrives, and see if I still have time to drive it over this week some time for an estimate.

The good news is that I’m here in the flat … the power is going nicely so I’ve made myself a lovely big mug of coffee … and the greater news is that my internet modem works perfectly out here, so I’m all set for the night.  I’m very disappointed I didn’t get to the airport in time to see my relatives before they flew back to Vancouver, but I’m very grateful I’m here now and can settle in and be a vegetable for the rest of the day (after wiping the surface spray off the benches and disposing of the dead cockroach bodies, and doing the site inspection.  Fingers crossed the furniture will arrive tomorrow … and fingers doubly crossed that we can get the garage door open tomorrow!!!

Rightio, I’m heading off to put some music on (bless my laptop, you were worth every cent!!!) … Mum I still don’t have a phone line connected yet, but I’ll give you a call as soon as I have a landline number for you to call! 😀 xxx

* * * * * * * * * *

Ooh, before I forget, though … one awesomely fantastic thing did happen today to put a smile on my face! 🙂  I called into the PO Box on the way home, and inside was a lovely envelope full of threads (well, actually two – but one was an order I’d made with Dragonfly Dreams) … KarenV was extremely generous and sent me some threads off my wishlist – thank you so much Karen, you truly made my day – it was a nice bright spot is a seriously grey one 🙂  Now it means I can kit a few more projects up woohoo!!! 😀

My choices for this theme are a bit ‘lateral’ … I think it’s important in life to take a step back, and take time to smell the roses … enjoy some peace and tranquility, and allow the time for your soul to find calm. I found the gardens behind the Sik Sik Yuen temple in Hong Kong to be extremely peaceful and tranquil – a place to breathe deeply and feel at one with the world … I love this photo with the hustle and bustle of the city so close at hand in the background, but a place of serene bliss amidst all of that 🙂

Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple

Also, it’s important to appreciate and enjoy the small things in life … like this sculpture in the Enchanted Maze Garden, Mornington Peninsula – I loved the tranquility of the whole setting around this sculptural piece, as well as loving the caring pose of the girl herself, totally engrossed in the caring of the wee frog 🙂

Home & Family TO BE FIXED

Just a tad speechless …

After spending the day at the flat unpacking my latest car-ful of belongings, washing all my new 12-setting cutlery set etc, and killing cockroaches in the kitchen and bathroom (only one in each, so not like an infestation!), I start driving home in the pouring rain only to be told via mobile phone that Dodgey Brothers Removals can’t get their stupid bl**dy truck up the driveway and can’t get to the storage unit … so it’s our responsibility to go hire a smaller truck from Hertz or Thrifty or somewhere and bring the stuff to the truck … bless Lisa, she told him to ‘get nicked’, and he’s looking at hiring a truck himself (which we are now having to pay for apparently) – not happy Jan!  They haven’t managed to fix it by closing time tonight, so the delivery may now be another day late … (I think I’ve spent more time on my mobile phone in the last two hours than I have in the last two months haha)

As for me, my blood pressure was soaring just a tad (not helped by taking a full 3 hours to drive home again ‘cos people don’t know how to drive in the rain ho-hum) … so I called into the supermarket on the way home and sat and ate an entire 100g chocolate block in the car … choccie is without a doubt the BEST comfort food EVER!!!  Now I’ve just had a nice warm shower, and I’m about to sit down with the largest and strongest Jim Beam & lemonade in history … {{heavy sigh}}.

Anyway, regardless, it’s my official moving day for me personally in the morning … only time will tell when the furniture will be moving in!!! 😦

SBQ

Squillions of SBQ’s!!

  With housesitting, limited internet access, and lately limited time available, I’m woefully behind with the SBQ’s … so here goes a massive catch-up (I’m killing time before the traffic dies down, so I can make a trek across town with another boot load of stuff – Nigel & Brenda have convinced me to stay here another night tonight so I’m not pottering around in an empty home, but I’ll definitely be heading out there tomorrow for good).  Rightio, here goes with the SBQ’s, starting with the most recent first:

17 January 2008 – This week’s SBQ was suggested by Outi and is:

“What is your favorite past time while stitching? Do you just enjoy silence, listen to music/audiobooks or do you “watch” TV/movies? Do you have specific favorites you listen to/watch while stitching?”

This is a nice easy one – without a doubt my favourite pastime is watching DVD’s or TV … coming in second is listening to audiobooks.  I can watch movies over and over again and not get bored, and I love my DVD collection almost as much as my stitching stash!

9 January 2008 – This week’s SBQ is:

“What was your favorite finish of 2007?”

This one is harder to answer … I’d have to probably say my CA Wells class project – Peacock Needle/Scissorcase – it’s the most challenging piece of ‘finishing’ I’ve one to date, and I’m particularly proud of it.  Coming up a close second is Just Nan’s “A Little Joy” Christmas Ornament – I absolutely adore the little over-one centrepiece and was pleased as punch how well it turned out with the nun’s stitch edging etc.

3 January 2008 – This week’s SBQ is:

“Are you starting something new to celebrate the New Year or participating in “Guilt Free January?” If so, what are you planning on starting?”

My entire year of 2008 is going to be Guilt Free and Enjoy your Stitching Year – no January new starts for me … but watch out when I’m settled into my new home 😉

27 December 2007 – This week’s SBQ is:

“Did you receive any stitching-related gifts for the holidays?”

I was going to say no, but then I remembered Mum bought me a new floor model Ott-lite daylight lamp, so that would make my answer a “yes” 😀

19 December 2007 – This week’s SBQ was suggested by Kathryn and is:

“Have you ever helped anyone else learn to stitch? Have you ever helped anyone learn a new stitch or technique?”

Yes – I taught a small group of girls how to XS when I was an adult student at College – I kitted up a bookmark design for each of them.  I also taught Mum how to XS at the grand age of 70 … and now she’s hooked and wondering why she didn’t start it up when she was younger 🙂

12 December 2007 – Today’s SBQ was suggested by Nancy and is:

“Do you do anything special to your threads before putting them through your fabric to make them more manageable?”

Every now and then I’ll use Thread Heaven, but that’s about it.

5 December 2007 – Today’s SBQ was suggested by Nancy and is:

“What tips would you give to a new stitcher to help her stitch faster and neater while still keeping it enjoyable?”

Just to make sure all your crosses go in the same direction – and don’t stress … personally I think the enjoyment part should be the most important – I don’t stress about having perfect stitches, and I certainly don’t railroading etc, I just stitch for the enjoyment of seeing that fabric fill up and come to life.  On the other hand I’ve found using a frame with scrollbars wonderful to increase the speed of stitching, as I can use both hands at once.  The only other thing to suggest is having a few pieces kitted up, so there’s always a project on hand that you can pick up without having to think – that always slows me down, as it takes me forever to get my A into G and kit something new up, and I end up not stitching at all because of it.  Sorry, not many tips coming from this gal!

9 November 2007 – Today’s SBQ is:

“When you have to frog out stitches, do you reuse that thread or do you start over with a new strand?”

Depends on the state of the thread – if I only have to frog a few stitches, I’ll frog and continue again with the same thread … likewise if I’m on my very last strand of a kitted thread and I don’t have any more in my stash, I’ll end up having to re-use it again – otherwise I scrap it and cut off a new piece of thread.

2 November 2007 – Today’s SBQ was suggested by Ternezia and is:

“If you were a cross stitch designer, what would your design style be?”

Very eclectic, I guess – I don’t have one particular style of design that I like to stitch, so it would be a mix of whimsical, traditional, and contemporary … either way it would likely be a type of stitching small (I’ve been tempted to try designing a needleroll a few times now – one day I might finally achieve that!).

24 October 2007 – This week’s SBQ is:

“Do you railroad?”

Only for satin stitches – everything else is fair game and falls as it lies …

17 October 2007 – This week’s SBQ was suggested by Jennifer and is:

“What proportion of your stitching is for your own personal use versus gifts?”

All of my stitching was given away as gifts until recently – now I’m more of a selfish stitcher and I’m stitching with myself in mind … although I’ve often started a project for myself then learnt someone adores that subject or project and it ends up being given away.  I’d like to get back into some more small pieces of gift stitching, though.

6 September 2007 – Today’s SBQ is:

“Would you ever stitch one of your BAPs a second time? (This does not include starting over because of mistakes, bad fabric, etc, rather stitching something from the first stitch for a second time.)”

That’s an easy one – no way!!!  A BAP takes me long enough to stitch it the first time, and with a stitching stash to keep me stitching until I’m 300 years old, there are too many other projects to excite me.

15 August 2008 – Today’s SBQ was suggested by Jennifer  and is:

“How did you get started stitching? Was there a person that inspired you?”

I’ve always been keen to try new crafting projects, so XS was just something else new to try – I picked up a simple tiny kit and taught myself from the kit instructions, and haven’t looked back!  It’s also the only crafting thing I’ve tried and kept up (don’t ask about all the supplies still sitting back in Auckland for basketweaving, silk painting, fabric dyeing, glass painting, and goodness knows what else!!).

I think I’ve missed a few dates out, but they’ll have to wait until another time … it’s time for me to get dressed and hike to the other side of town and kill a few cockroaches and/or spiders 😉

The moving blues …

… Yep, just when you think everything is moving along beautifully, something has to happen to kick that grin off your face … darn you Murphy and your blasted Law!!  I had a phone call from ‘Dodgey Brothers R Us Removals’ (not their actual name, to protect the not-so-innocent!) … saying that they can no longer deliver my furniture on Saturday, but ‘hopefully’ it will be Monday … aaaaarghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I won’t go into the details, but I’ve been a bit nervous about a few things with them over the last few days – so much so that I was considering flying down to Melbourne just to make sure everything was inventoried correctly etc … but that’s too long a story!

Let’s just say I went extremely quiet during the call, and that’s the sign that I’m literally seething and getting close to eruption status … after stating very calmly while rubbing my temples during the call that I’m unimpressed with the lack of notice and that I have no furniture in the flat and that I’m moving in today, I finally hung up the call then went downstairs to walk off the frustration for a few seconds before I told my colleagues what had gone off.  They demanded I call them back and have a hissy fit, but what good would it do?  I’m basically at their mercy until it arrives …

BUT, as per normal, I’m not the sort of person to let things get me down … I’m thinking about the positives this has brought about:

  1. I get the full day today to finish off packing my final things for moving tomorrow (I’m staying here an extra night with Brenda & Nigel, and I have the next 4 working days off as annual leave);
  2. I can get my last load of laundry done today as well before having to share a laundry tomorrow;
  3. I actually now have “5” days off work instead of the original 4 as I’ve requested another days leave to give me time to unpack – and I may even taken another off depending how late the furniture arrives on Monday;
  4. My aunt and uncle are passing through Sydney airport on the way home to Canada on Saturday, and it was going to be touch and go whether I could get out to the airport to see them, but now I shouldn’t have any problem doing that (I just hope I catch them, as they don’t know I’m coming!);
  5. I get an extra stitching/leisure day in the flat while waiting for the furniture to arrive … but I think I’ll have to pop out and buy a small table and chair to sit on instead of having to use the floor 24/7;
  6. I have more time to work out how to get into the darned garage at the flat – and I found Mortein insect bombs to use in there instead of having to spray … awesome!
  7. I get to see ER and the Amazing Race on TV before I move out – as I have no TV until the furniture arrives, I’ll be relying on DVD’s I’ve got with me to be played on the laptop;
  8. I have time to start reading the Time Traveller’s Wife to give it back to Brenda ASAP (it’s on loan from someone else).

So, you see, there’s always something to be grateful for when everything turns pear shaped!  No point getting upset over it, that’ll just give you ulcers … now I’m off to throw the washing in the machine, and head off to Bunnings and/or Ikea to go furniture shopping (there’s a cheap cane chair and table set for a patio at Bunnings, which could work well, and will be nice on the balcony afterwards).

So, no stitching today as originally planned … I’m off shopping and packing instead 😀

BTW, in case you weren’t aware, I’m holding a Needleroll Class over at the Focus on Finishing blog 26-27 January – hope you can join me! Another positive, I managed to source and add a whole lot of needleroll information onto the blog this morning as well 😀

Now, before I go, let me just say thank you for all the comments about my little flat – unfortunately the photos actually make the place look better (and bigger) than it actually is … especially the bathroom, which is quite small (the bath isn’t a full-size bath, it’s like a half-bath/shub, if that makes it easier to visualise).  But I don’t care, it’s ours all ours and that’s all that matters … and even in really nasty traffic last night it only took me 30 minutes to get there to unload another bootful of belongings – sheer heaven!  To answer a question, though, before I forget – there is no refrigerator there in the kitchen, because over here you have to provide all the appliances (including the fridge) yourself.  There sometimes may not be curtains either (personally I’ll be putting my chiffons up in the lounge again just to add a bit of colour, even though there are venetian blinds on all the windows.

Rightio, I’d better stop waffling and get moving – time to get motivated and get things done before the whole day disappears!

New home!!!

Woohoo, I have keys … and a new little flat. Not the flashest of accommodation, but it’s all ours … for the next 12 months anyway! 🙂

Here’s the lounge at the window/balcony end (this’ll be your bedroom, Mum!! haha):

And the lounge as you come in the front door, with a slight alcove:

The kitchen, where the dining table will be going:

The kitchen itself is quite small, but with an extra bench cupboard I have, it will give it a bit more room for storage etc:

What will be my bedroom:

I forgot to take photos of the outside, and of the beach, so I’ll do that some time over the weekend. It will look a lot different when the furniture is in, and there’s a bit more colour around 🙂

One more sleep to go …

The first countdown is about to be over – tomorrow I pick the keys up to our little tiny flat … I can barely contain the excitement!!  I’ve adored being here with Brenda and Nigel, but I’m literally exhausted all the time and can barely string two words together by the time late evening arrives.  In fact yesterday we went to the movies in the morning to see National Treasure 2 – Book of Secrets (which I loved, by the way), and by 3pm I could barely keep my eyes open.  It’s very very rare for me to nap in the afternoons, but I gave up and had a ‘small’ rest – and woke up at 6.40pm yikes … then I lasted 1 1/2 hours being awake before going back to bed again and fell right asleep again for the rest of the night.  Oh well, only 3 more sleeps and I’ll be sleeping on the floor in my own litte flat … I’m so keen and excited to be getting in there that I don’t care about the furniture not being there as well haha.

Other great news today is that my very best friend in NZ is coming over to visit (I’m staying with Vicki’s brother here in Sydney, Nigel) over Easter.  Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while may remember that I got exceptionally emotional a year ago when I had to cancel plans to visit Brenda and Vicki here in Sydney for Brenda’s 40th birthday due to financial reasons.  Well, now I’m in Sydney I get more chance to see my bestest friend as well – and I finally get to meet the latest addition to her family, her newest son Jayden.  I’m really excited to be seeing her again, as I miss her lots … and this catch up is a year and a half overdue!

Sorry this is such a quick post – it’s just a quick drive-by while I was waiting for a download to finish … and seeing as it’s now 1 1/2 hours past my bedtime I’d better hit the hay for the night.  I have my camera, surface spray, and measuring tape all ready for tomorrow … plus the first lot of packing will be in the boot – I figured I’d spread the unpacking out over the next couple of days to save my energy lugging things up to the 3rd floor of the apartment block.  You’d think after the last apartment that I’d find one with a lift … nah, no such luck! haha.

Hopefully in a week’s time I’ll be better placed to keep on top of blog reading and posting on a more regular basis again … not to mention that stitching that I’m chomping at the bit to get at! LOL 😀

Cross Stitch, Stash

A teensy bit of stash

Today I spent a wonderful few hours browsing and chatting with Karen at Dragonfly Dreams (soon to be renamed as The Stitching Post) in the Blue Mountains.  As always, I feel as though we’ve known each other for years, and feel really comfortable in their company.  I managed to come home with a few guilt-free goodies … guilt-free ‘cos I’ve finished the 50 project challenge!  I haven’t taken photos, as I can’t be bothered trying to find the camera right now and uploading the photos … I might update this post tomorrow with piccies if I get time … maybe 😛

Anyway, following are the goodies that followed me home today:

I’m really excited at the prospect of stitching again – since my last finishes I haven’t lifted a needle at all … while I’m here in Glenwood I usually only have the time and energy to put a few stitches in on Sunday nights.  By the time I do my 5 x 12-13 hour days, I’m ready to collapse in a heap on Friday night, and I’m sure if I did stitch, I’d just have to rip out all the errors again on Saturday, so I avoid it big-time!

In less than a week, though, I’ll be sat merrily stitching away until my hands are ready to drop off, and I really can’t wait – I’m so incredibly excited at the prospect of all the projects that I really really want to start (and also those that I want to finish).  I’ve even taken an extra day off work just so I can sit around all day and stitch for one day … I’ll have no furniture in the flat at that point, but I intend propping myself up against the wall, while sitting on my duvet inner and blow-up mattress, listening to DVD’s and/or talking books on the laptop, and celebrating the fact that I am no longer having to commute a million miles every week … I’m feeling all dreamy now just thinking about it!  As for the furniture truck, it can take its merry time to arrive, as then I’ll be flat out unpacking instead of stitching haha.

I’m looking forward to meeting a few more stitchers in Sydney in 2008 as well – and over the last couple of weeks I have been considering opening my flat up for a stitching day … I just have to work out how many people we can fit it as it’s such a small flat – it might not end up being an option, but it’s worth considering anyway.  It would be lovely to meet a few more stitchers up here – spending time in Karen’s company, surrounded by those wonderful goodies in the shop, makes me realise how much I adore being in contact with other stitchers.  I have been missing my good friends Tannia and Sharon very much over the last few weeks for that reason (although I’d love them if they weren’t actually stitchers!).

Rightio, time to head off and kit up a couple of ornies for our ornment SAL challenge on one of the Yahoo groups – I’m hoping to get one of the ornies stitched tomorrow night (or close to being stitched anyway), but it takes me forever to kit it up then start stitching, so much better to get organised in advance!  Plus I also want to kit up Ladybug, Ladybug (Little House Needleworks) – I’m itching to start the Sampler Lady by LHN, but I’m still waiting for the threads to arrive from back order … then once my Ladybug, Ladybug piece is finished I need to start some serious stitching on my CA Wells piece – so far I’ve managed a whole 2 flower heads, because I’m having to stitch in hand (need my sewing machine to sew on some side strips so it will go in the Qsnaps), and I detest stitching in hand.  That’ll be a much better project to start concentrating on when I settle into the new place.

Rightio, time to get cracking ‘cos I’m starting to get heavy-eyed … time to move the body … and maybe time to get a chilled glass of Chardonnay to help with resuscitation haha.

Here is a photo of a skinny sculpture at Ashcombe Maze & Lavender Gardens, Mornington Peninsula.

Also, here is one seriously skinny Christmas Tree – Frazier’s best friend was too tight to buy a proper Christmas tree from the retailers, and decided in his usual illegal fashion to steal one from a farmer’s property … and almost got bitten by a brown snake for his trouble. Would have served him right, too, for stealing!! Anyway, I nicknamed the tree “Jenny”, after the Jenny Craig diet regime … ‘cos I thought it looked liked a poor starved wee thing 😉
